We celebrated National Doctors' Day on March 30 to honor physicians for the work they do, the communities they serve, and their contributions to society as a whole. It is their hard work and devotion that keeps all of us healthy and advances the medical sciences, after all.
The history of National Doctors' Day can be traced back to 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a prominent Georgia doctor, decided to mail greeting cards to all of the doctors she knew and to place red carnations on the graves of deceased physicians to honor their societal contributions. She chose March 30 as the date because that’s the day that Dr. Crawford W. Long used an ether anesthetic for the first time during surgery in 1842 – a mammoth advancement in technology that remains unrivaled today when it comes to patient comfort and pain control.
